At first view a brillant book, at the second just superficial and quite disappointing • • • • • (bewertet mit 2 von 5 Punkten) Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen (REAL NAME) Rezension bezieht sich auf: When Cultures Collide: Leading Across Cultures: Leading, Teamworking and Managing Across the Globe (Taschenbuch) I was impressed when I started reading this book. The first part - the theoretic one - is really good (the first 20 pages). But when it gets to the core, it is simply disappointing. The author does exactly what he said he wouldnt do: stereotyping. The French are like that, the Spanish like this and so. Phrases like "It is worth pointing out that the French and Italians do not like each other particularly, but they are both good communicators ..." are confusing if not just wrong. You even sense which countries the author likes and which ones he dislikes (Germany belongs to the last group). After the first 20 pages his book only consists of examples and generalizations. In the 2 pages about "culturshock" he doesn't even mention this word (exept in the title) but tells a story about an Italian business woman coming late in Germany. When I read the part about Mexico, where I live since a year, I had to skip the last pages for not getting seriously annoyed. What he writes about the Mexicans has absolutly nothing to do with them. It's kind of an abstract about Mexican history and an intend to squeeze something about their culture out of their history. I doubt that the author has ever been to Mexico. To sum it up: This book is quite easy to read, has a lot of examples and seems more like a collection of anecdotes than a serious working book. You can read the introduction - it's worth it, but skip the other 500 pages if you don't want to get a strongly stereotyped (if not wrong) idea of all the countries you don't know yet.
